A Quick History of the Scenic Corolla Community in the Outer Banks NC
Prized
for the combination of upscale shops and dining options while offering
nature-filled privacy and seclusion, Corolla is a unique destination
that offers spectacular 4WD beaches off the Corolla coastline. If you
and your family are heading for a week-long vacation and staying on or
purchasing any of the
Outer Banks NC homes for sale in the area, here’s a quick take on the history of the picturesque Corolla community.
While
Corolla wasn’t the modern vacation hotspot it is today, the village was
discovered along with the Currituck Mainland, Duck, and Carova in the
late 1600s by early European settlers who stayed in the island and built
a small community. For several centuries, Corolla remained home to this
small community of settlers and their families. In the late 1800s, the
population grew slightly as some lifesaving stations were built to help
sailors navigate the treacherous waters of the North Carolina coast.
By
1873, the red brick Currituck Lighthouse, a top tourist spot today was
built. By 1922, two of Philadelphia’s wealthiest residents, Edward and
Marie Louise Knight built their famous grand seaside home now known as
the Whalehead Club. The Knights hosted local hunting and fishing
exhibitions in Corolla. But despite this, Corolla remained relatively
unknown for the next 5 decades and was only traveled to by residents of
OBX NC or guests who are brave enough to
drive for miles past the unpredictable clay and sand trails.
Before
the NC Highway 12 was built in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, the
only way for visitors to access most of the beaches on the Outer Banks
was through the sandy beaches, making a trip to the OBX a truly
adventure-filled experience. There wasn’t any legitimate road to Corolla
until the NC Highway 12 was finally extended to the village. Once the
highway was built in 1984, development finally started, with a handful
of communities popping up along the Corolla beaches.
From
hotels to resorts to restaurants, shopping centers, groceries, and
more, Corolla experienced a surge in construction over the past 3
decades. Together with these developments, various warning signs have
been put up to help guide both residents and guests of
homes for sale on the Outer Banks NC. Apart from No Parking signs, they have also put up signs such as
The Water’s Edge and Dune Line are Considered a Roadway and
Speed Limit 15 within 300 Feet of Pedestrians for people traveling beyond where the paved road ends into the beach communities of Carova.
With
all the developments that have added to the vibrant life of the town of
Corolla, thanks to its vocal local community, Corolla has been able to
maintain its small town beach community charm, now coupled with
necessary amenities but without any of the grand developments
experienced by other beach communities in North Carolina.
As
such, the local community has advised all visitors and new homeowners
to help preserve the beauty of Corolla by following all the simple road
and beach signs scattered throughout town. If you’re looking for

Things to Keep in Mind While Driving on Outer Banks NC Carova Beach
Unique
from other beaches on any other region of Outer Banks, Carova beaches
come with plenty of road signs that help both guests and residents of
homes for sale on Outer Banks NC.
Considered as Outer Banks’ last frontier, Carova Beach has become a
go-to destination for tired and stressed city dwellers who want to
escape the pavement and the bright and busy city lights.
Apart
from tourist attractions such as the Currituck National Wildlife
Refuge, the Currituck Sound, the Whalehead Club, the Currituck Beach
Lighthouse, the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education, and more,
visitors flock to Carova Beach because of the thrill that driving on the
beach provides.
Compared
to the other East Coast beach vacation destinations, Carova offers a
one-of-a-kind experience that beach driving enthusiasts enjoy. The small
beach communities of Seagull, Swan Beach, North Swan Beach, Carova
Beach, and Penny’s Hill are some of the notable locations for beach
driving.
To access the 4 wheel drive beaches, guests and residents of Outer Banks NC
homes for sale
can take the sand ramp that is conveniently located at the very
northern end of Corolla. From there, you can enjoy miles long of beach
driving that offers picturesque ocean views while spotting a few of the
famed Corolla Wild Horses grazing the dunes.
There
are posted signs all over Carova that show the various traffic rules
that all visitors must follow. The flow of traffic is near the shoreline
and dunes, with a row of parked vehicles sitting in between. There are No Parking and No Stopping at Entrance to the Beach and No Parking within the First 1½ Miles of the Entrance.
Make sure to park perpendicular to the water in the middle of the
beach. Avoid driving or parking on the dunes, vegetation, or wrack lines
- a line of accumulated natural debris that was left by a previous high
tide and provides food for the birds in the area.
No ATV Without Permit
If
you’ll be bringing your 4x4 or ATV, keep in mind that as a driver, you
must have a current, valid driver’s license and a permit because ATVs
are not allowed on the beach without a permit. These permits, which are
available to Currituck County property owners only, can be obtained from
the county’s main Currituck Banks government offices located at 1123
Ocean Trail in Corolla.
In
addition, it is recommended that all drivers to have in their vehicle:
tow straps, spare tire, shovel, jack board, and jack. All beach drivers
are also advised to lower the tire pressure of their vehicle to 15 to 20
psi so that you get more surface contact with the sand. As all
established sand tracks are recognized as Public Vehicular Area (PVA),
all drivers should be mindful of all road
rules such as speed limits, proper use of turn signals, and more.
Help
preserve the beauty of the pristine beaches of Carova by following
these simple rules for beach driving. Allow everyone to enjoy the beauty
of Carova by being a responsible and respectful visitor. If you’re
